About the Organization: Guest House provides temporary lodging for medical patients and their families who seek medical treatment from Chicago area hospitals. Guest House is the only organization in Chicago that serves all ages, all diagnoses, inpatients, and outpatients. We offer 47 fully furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments in our centrally-located facility on the campus University of Illinois Chicago.
About the Position: The Volunteer Program Assistant helps to deliver the Guest House Volunteer Program which provides a supportive and encouraging environment for guests. The Volunteer Program Assistant is responsible for keeping the communication of our programming current, being a welcoming presence for those visiting the Guest House Community Room, and keeping track of the volunteer data accumulated through group and individual projects. The Volunteer Program Assistant will interact with medical patients and family members staying at Guest House as they come into the Community Room, as well as help with weeknight dinners and Saturday volunteer projects. The Volunteer Program Assistant reports to the Manager of Volunteers and Programming.
Desired Schedule: 20 hours per week
- Thursday: 1:00pm – 7:30pm
- 2 Saturdays per month: 9:15am – 12:30pm
- Remaining hours and days can be adjusted per availability and programming needs
Specific Tasks
- Maintain volunteer and program calendars
- Work with the Manager to coordinate weeknight meals and Saturday events
- Prepare and distribute weekly & monthly program materials for guests and volunteers
- Become proficient in using Donor/Volunteer software and maintain data collection for volunteer and guest program reports
- Register and orient new volunteers to Guest House mission and tasks of volunteer project/s
- Communicate in a timely manner with the leader of volunteer groups
- Document events with pictures and follow up with emails to the volunteer coordinator and GH Manager
- Assist guests with inquiries and direct to the appropriate department staff, as needed
- Assist guests in using the computer or smart phone for transportation needs
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma required; college degree or equivalent experience preferred
- Strong communication skills and detail oriented
- Comfortable using Microsoft products including Excel and Outlook and willing to learn new programs
- Good decision-making ability to protect the safety, privacy, and security of guests
- Able to empathize with people in difficult medical situations
- Positive attitude with a willingness to jump in where needed
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
