Position Focus:

The Clinical Research Support Laboratory (CRSL) is the primary non-CLIA certified laboratory responsible for collecting, processing, stabilizing, documenting, shipping and tracking all research biospecimens from patients participating in therapeutic clinical trials supported by the Yale Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office.
The CRSL Research Technician supports the Smilow Care Center facilities by providing meticulous preparation and coordination of the shipments of biological specimens from patients participating in numerous on-site clinical trials.
Working under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, this role involves understanding and following protocols and lab manuals for a large number of clinical trials with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. The CRSL Research Technician is responsible for using a high degree of independent judgement and extensive communication with Clinical Trials Office staff and other research staff to perform daily processing of patient-derived materials, interpreting lab templates for hundreds of oncology studies, and preparing daily and future shipments of patient-derived specimens. This position will float between the Smilow Care Centers where needed, with the North Haven location as the position’s home base.

Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 2. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. 3. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Modifies equipment according to experimental specifications. 4. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety. Prepares related reports. May prepare financial information and monitor budgets. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to interpret written policies and procedures including complex materials, clinical trial protocols, and technical lab manuals. Experience working within a regulated laboratory environment. Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate essential information to staff.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent attention to detail, attendance, and punctuality are critical to this position. Strong organizational and inter-personal skills, with demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to work in a team as well as independently, and to effectively manage change.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong computer skills including intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). , Proven ability and willingness to learn new systems, processes and technology.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA and ability to ensure strict patient confidentiality.

Demonstrated proficiency with medical laboratory terminology, and blood processing techniques.
