Scientist I (Scale-Up, Fermentation)


YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The primary responsibilities of this role, Scientist I (Scale-Up, Fermentation), are to:


  • Conducts research and contributes to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, and trade secrets;
  • Accountable for cross-functional work in multiple platforms/process areas;
  • Utilizes original thinking and deductive reasoning to apply scientific principles to the design and interpretation of scientific experiments;
  • Leads workflow optimization and method validation projects using multiple data sources. Uses specialized knowledge, the broad application of scientific principles, current literature when identifying and implementing process improvements;
  • Prepares reports with large data sets under time constraints and across various project types;
  • Adheres to established protocols and techniques including method development while effectively operating and troubleshooting a variety of instrumentation;
  • Prioritizes and coordinates work within a large team and provides training to contingent workforce while maintaining detailed record keeping;
  • Achieves commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and best practices;
  • Thrives on meeting challenges and insisting on high quality deliverables while building external and internal relationships;
  • Designs and analyzes the results of experiments independently and performs experiments across various (bio)molecules/product types;
  • Communicates and interprets the results of experiments, status of method development, cost/benefit analysis, and lab related issues to partners and key stakeholders;
  • Takes initiative in keeping current with literature in areas of assignment and in areas of professional interest.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. OR Master’s degree OR Bachelor’s degree;
  • Degree in Biotechnology, Technical Chemistry, Biology, or closely related life science area;
  • Strong acumen in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, and fundamental engineering;
  • Strong track record of independently designing experiments, analyzing data, and communicating findings to key stakeholders;
  • High throughput laboratory automation experience with mechanical aptitude for operating and troubleshooting automation;
  • Proficiency with data analysis and visualization software;
  • Ability to define and utilize Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure lab and workflow health.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Five or more years of relevant experience (including post undergraduate experience in industry or academia);
  • Experience cultivating microorganisms (prokaryotes/eukaryotes) in various scales;
  • Prior experience with programming in Python or similar language;
  • Experience programming visualizations to display cultivation and/or process outcomes;
  • Strong track record of success designing experiments.

Domestic relocation may be available for this role.

Position will be based in Chesterfield, Missouri (St. Louis area).
