Liberty Mutual Global Risk Solutions is seeking a Manager, Actuary to lead loss reserving for North America General Liability. In this role, you will have direct accountability for $3.5 billion of reserves in a diverse and challenging book of business. You will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the balance sheet, using your analytical talents to solve complex reserving problems, and providing insights to leaders in order to influence business decisions. You'll work in a collaborative and dynamic work environment, across multiple functions including claims, underwriting, pricing, and finance, as well as across business units with reserving peers.


The salary range posted reflects the range for the varying pay scale that encompasses each of the Liberty Mutual regions.


Responsibilities:

  • Manages a team performing reserving analyses for General Liability across North America. Works with direct reports to identify strengths and development needs, regularly providing coaching and discussing progress on development plans and encouraging career development activities. Works with team to create an environment that is inclusive and collaborative.
  • Presents project work, findings and results to executives on a regular basis. Develops polished and professional report-outs, geared toward the Chief Actuary and business leadership levels, summarizing results, highlighting support for critical changes, and conveying key implications to business partners.
  • Produces diagnostics and leading indicators sufficient to identify changes in claims handling, business mix, and internal and external trends that can impact reserve estimates. Ensure reserve estimates are appropriately responsive to emerging developments and trends.
  • Provides clear and concise communication of technical actuarial work to technical and non-technical audiences, effectively influences key stakeholders.
  • Oversees multiple, complex project work streams related to key underlying assumptions designed to improve reserve setting.
  • Supports development of annual business plans for General Liability.
  • Maintains clear and concise documentation of critical assumptions and work products.
  • Collaborates with and provides actuarial technical assistance, information, and support to peers, senior managers, and others within and outside of the organization.
  • Monitors and analyzes developments in the marketplace and compares to internal trends, highlighting similarities and differences. Recommends areas for strategic or tactical research.
  • Identifies opportunities for innovation in reserving processes, tools, and techniques; provides direction for creative and strategic problem solving.
  • Mentors, motivates, and trains less experienced staff and peers.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree required
  • Insurance designations desirable
  • ACAS required; FCAS preferred.
  • Minimum 3+ years post-fellowship
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible experience in an actuarial role, some of which may include experience as an actuarial candidate taking exams
  • Experience as a coach leader or mentor required
  • Requires detailed knowledge of the operations and processes associated with the operational group
  • Requires a very experienced and knowledgeable actuarial viewpoint in a wide variety of actuarial subjects, and in Company, Industry, and Regulatory practices
  • Knowledge should include economic conditions, how other functions work, and communication techniques
  • Ability to understand, probe, assess and provide guidance on the technical work being done by technical professionals and individual contributors
  • Understand cutting edge research and technologies, within and outside the insurance industry
  • Able to make connections between various work streams to influence or redirect work, as well as ability to translate findings and impact on business to senior leadership
  • Very advanced and sophisticated conceptual ability
  • Strong understanding of actuarial and mathematical techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of specialized software, actuarial and statistical methods, tools, and the existence of programming languages
  • Highly developed communication and presentation skills in different functional areas, as well as externally
  • Ability to make decisions with incomplete information
  • Ability to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization
  • Ability to persuade and influence business decisions by clearly explaining actuarial analyses and technical concepts (statistics and modeling) to Actuarial and Non-Actuarial Senior Managers, Peers, and Staff
