The Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) invites applications for the Assistant Director of K-9 Programs. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of K-9 Programming, this position will play a critical role in implementing the student programs of DPI's Community Education Unit, which is focused on expanding the diversity of our tech talent pipeline with an emphasis on computer science, data science and other tech-oriented fields. Overall, this includes advancing programmatic and systemic strategies across a learner's journey from middle grades, high school to the transition into community college and/or 4-year universities, to a successful career in tech - with an intentional focus on underrepresented and underserved populations. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Help manage the day-to-day implementation of the Community Education Unit's K-9 programs (e.g., Discover Computing, Digital Explorers)
  • Coordinate and support implementation of student programming, including logistics of activities and events at DPI, virtually and other locations, which could include Saturday sessions, after-school programs, summer camps, workshops, guest speakers, field trips, work-based learning, problem-based learning, and other immersive learning experiences.
  • Co-Facilitate, design and implement K-9 student programming and support teacher, mentor, and near-peer mentor orientation, training and/or professional development sessions.
  • Administer the student experience with DPI programs, with attention to student needs and challenges, maintaining contact and building rapport with students to ensure successful completion of Community Ed student programs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of K-9 programming through school-based partnerships, which will start with a pilot group of schools.
  • Support high school programming activities as needed
  • Support DPI's Assistant Director of Recruitment with outreach and recruitment efforts as needed, including building relationships with students and their parents, as well as channel partners such as high school administrators/counselors, aligned non-profits, community/civic organizations, community college partners, and others that work directly with youth to target for DPI programs.
  • Work with our relevant internal partners across the University of Illinois System, other DPI university partners, private sector partners and educational partners in the community (non-profits, high school partners) to implement programs, advance partnerships and achieve shared impact.
  • Assist with tracking and measuring outcomes and reach of the Community Education Unit's programmatic efforts.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 3 years working in education, preferably in the areas of computing and technology
  • Experience working with K-12 populations, particularly students from underserved backgrounds
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to promoting and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong written and oral communication and public speaking skills, relationship building, collaboration, and emotional intelligence
  • Spanish speaking is a plus
